Patriot Day is observed every year on September 11th in memory of the traumatic events that took place on September 11, 2001.
This post is not yoga related but rather a chance to remember those who died and all the first responders who worked tirelessly to help those who survived and the clean up of this horrific event and how we as Americans came together.
"On the direction of the President, the American flag should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them, may lay flowers or visit memorials."
Also on 9-11 we honor the bravery of first responders, the strength of the survivors, and the unity that followed the tragedy. Across the nation, Americans come together to reflect on the events of September 11, participate in memorial services, and observe moments of silence.
Where were you on September 11, 2001? Do you remember? I remember so vividly. I was living in Maryland. I had gone to pick up my new dining room set. I was heading home when all the radio stations interrupted for an important message. And there it
was...announcers from every station across the United States revealing to us the horror of an airplane crashing into Tower One. Everyone scurrying to find out why this was happening. Was the pilot sick? Asleep? Was it engine malfunction? Then, in a matter of minutes another plane flew into the 2nd tower.
It's been so long now I can't recall the timeline exactly but the story was becoming too impossible to believe. Someone would purposefully sacrifice themselves crashing into tower buildings?? Glass/shrapnel flew everywhere, fires, huge smoke, people jumping from the windows, and the ultimate horror of the buildings collapsing. With people still inside! Right there in the middle of NY.
All I wanted to do was speed to my kids' schools and get them out and hold them tightly. That is what I did. The world and our towns and our homes became silent in utter disbelief. Then as the days turned to weeks and months we rallied together and we weren't going to let anyone do this to us again.
This tragedy became a reason to come
together. We cried, prayed, helped, hugged. We put aside our differences and were just human beings feeling the emotions of what was happening to our country and to our neighbors.
I believe with my every being we all want to love and be loved. We must pray for those who don't feel this way. I pray every night for those with hardened hearts. We are here on this earth to love our neighbors as we'd like to be loved. Be the best version of you and do it for the right reasons, not for accolades, but because that's who you are. Your smile, opening a door, telling someone who's not having a good day to have a good/blessed day might be just what they need...kindness. The more we show it, the more contagious it becomes and next thing you know we are a different world.
Have a blessed day and know we love you!
